The rules for qualifying for the 2010 BMFA space modelling team

It is an honour to represent your country at the European or World Championships. FAIR runs three qualifying events, for team selection, throughout out the British flying season, one of which is always the BMFA National Championships. Points are awarded on the basis of 100 points to the winner of the class at a qualifier, with the other competitors receiving points based on their percentage score against the winner.

A worked example for a duration class

Winners total time

400 seconds

100 points

2nd place time

300 seconds

75 points

3rd place time

200 seconds

50 points

A competitor’s two best scores from the three qualifiers are counted for team qualification. For example if a competitor scored 50 points in qualifier one, 100 points at the second and 80 points at the third then their total score is 230 points. However, their qualifing score is 180 (the 50 is dropped as the lowest score).

Once the qualifying events are complete, the top three point scorers, in a class, will be proposed to the BMFA as the team members for that class, with the fourth highest point scoring being the reserve.  However, as there is potential for each of the five Championship classes to have three different team members, resulting in a team of fifteen seniors and fifteen juniors, BMFA will place an upper limit on the number of team members they can support. In practice this means that those potential team members that only fly in one class may lose the opportunity to attend championships in an attempt to manage team numbers.

Special Note

The rules for the landing target in class S8E/P will change for the 2009 championship to reflect the British proposals at the recent FAI space subcommittee meeting. The British qualifying events was flown to the 2009 rules with a spot landing rather than the previous straight line target. Those interested in practising may wish to make themselves a landing tape of 10 metres length, marked every metre from the centre. The first metre scores 100 points, the second 90 points, the third 80 etc. No points for landing outside 10 metres.
